We are at the height of summer. My garden is in a sleepy mode, much of the first bloom has now passed. But my roses are starting their second flourish, and my Shasta daisies raise their petals in praise every day. Their sunny interiors are always a cheerful sight out my window.
It seems when there is a lot of cultural noise, the forest and garden stand in stark opposition. The mountains continue their praise to the Lord by their enormous presence that cannot be moved. My garden reflects a stalwart desire to bloom. It’s a lesson for us.
During my morning devotions, I love to read the little book of Pilgrim prayers called, The Valley of Vision. I thought you might enjoy some of these precious prayers to meditate upon. So often when I read them, I am reminded of my days spent with nature.
“Oh God,
Praise waiteth for thee,
and to render it is my noblest exercise.
This is due from all thy creatures, for all thy works display thy attributes and fulfill thy designs.
The sea, dry land,
winter cold,
summer heat,
morning light,
evening shade
are full of thee and thou givest me them richly to enjoy.”
“All thy works praise thee and thy saints bless thee;
Let me be numbered with the holy ones,
Resemble them in character and condition,
Sit with them at Jesus’ feet.” (1)
And finally, one of my absolute favorites,
“While Jesus is representing me in heaven, may I reflect him on earth.” (2)
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”
