Sometimes when I am doing my devotions, a verse stands out to me because it has penetrated my soul and spirit. This is one of the miraculous gifts you receive when reading the Bible. Many people think that scripture is hard to understand, so they don’t try. But in this day of computers, you can find versions of the Bible that meet your needs, even audio versions if you are not a visual learner.
This morning I was reading Romans 11 and this favorite verse struck me as I gazed out at the abundance and beauty of my spring garden.
“Oh, the depth of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!” (1)
Ponder this: the depth of the riches of the Lord’s knowledge and wisdom.
We all know someone who is super intelligent. But we don’t know anyone who can create the world we see, including humanity, except the Lord.
His knowledge is infinite. Our brains cannot even comprehend this truth completely. Add to that, wisdom.
Wisdom implies experience, history, and the ability to tie everything together. To make all things work together throughout time.
Here is Webster’s Dictionary’s definition of wisdom.
- “The ability to judge what is true, right or lasting; insight.
- Common sense, good judgment.
- The sum of learning through the ages; knowledge.” (2)
The Lord knows the beginning from the end. He created the vast universe.
Every hair on your head is numbered. He knows about every sparrow that falls to the ground.
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.” (3)
“Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (4)
He knows what will be the life of the Peter Rabbit bunnies that trespass in my garden. He knows yesterday, today and tomorrow. In fact, the scripture says, “Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today and tomorrow.” (5) Nothing will happen to you He doesn’t know beforehand.
The passage in Romans continues:
“For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?”
“Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?”
Think about this. There is nothing you can give to the Lord as repayment for your salvation. He’s not even asking you for repayment. He would like your love and devotion. But even when you fail at that, His love for you doesn’t end.
Now we get to the end of this passage.
“For from Him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” (6)
Everything we see in the world, in the forest, fields, lakes, mountains and ocean, He has created and gifted to you. Everything holds together. That means He holds your life together as well. Cherish that thought.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God …”
